Carsten is a registered representative before the Unified Patent Court (UPC), which became operational on 1 June 2023. He is also a qualified German and European patent attorney. His primary focus is within life sciences, especially in the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, gene technology, immunology and pharmaceuticals, with specialist expertise in the areas of Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-cell technology, gene editing, synthetic biology and small molecule pharmaceuticals.
Carsten has long-standing experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications as well as in advising clients on a range of IP strategies. Besides representing clients before the German Patent and Trademark Office and European Patent Office, both in examination and opposition/appeal proceedings, Carsten also assists many clients in international patent prosecution. He also assists many clients with the management of their portfolios, helping with planning and exploring the most practical uses for their current and planned IP rights. His work also includes freedom-to-operate analysis and validity opinions.
Carsten’s clients include universities, small and medium sized biotech companies as well as large multinational companies in the pharmaceutical industry.
