Age Appropriate Design Code – Are you compliant?
On 2 September 2021, the 12 month transition period of the ICO’s Age Appropriate Design Code came to an end.
The ICO's Age Appropriate Design Code (the Code) came into force just over a year ago, which means the 12 month transition period afforded to companies under the Code to comply has now come to an end.
The aim of the Code is to support compliance with the Data Protection Act 2018 and general principles of the General Data Protection Regulation to ensure online services appropriately safeguard children's personal data. The Code does this by setting out specific protections to be built into online services likely to be accessed by children. The Code sets out 15 standards of age appropriate design, each reflecting a risk-based approach.
For more information on the Children's Code, please see our publication here.
Next steps
We suggest that organisations that may provide services which are likely to be accessed by children should review the ICO's Children's Code Hub and consider if the code will apply to your organisation and if it does, what steps you need to take to ensure compliance now - we can also support you with this.
