Good news for e-mobility in Germany! Recently the German administration, by way of cabinet decision on 4 March 2020, brought forward a new law on e-mobility infrastructure.

The proposed law stipulates, that any new residential building built with more than ten parking spaces, will need to have the infrastructure necessary at each of this parking spaces to construct a charging point for electric vehicles. The same applies for renovations of a certain magnitude on existing residential buildings. Similarly, new or renovated business buildings with more than ten parking spaces will need to have at least one charging station available and provide the infrastructure at every fifth parking space.

Additionally existing business buildings with more than 20 parking spaces will have to meet these requirements even if not renovated by 1 January 2025. The applicability of the new regulations being irrespective of the buildings ownership situation. Therefore, this applies also in case the building is owned by a condominium owners' association.

In essence this means that for people living in such buildings, they will be able to have their own charging station built at the parking space assigned to them. Therefore it might be possible in the future to eg support customers financially or otherwise in building such charging stations, when selling them a new electric vehicle. For this purpose it might be sensible to look for possible cooperation partners offering such charging stations. The cost for such charging stations form should be in the range of a couple hundred to 3,000 Euros depending on the type, charging speed and other factors.
