The exponential rise of institutional interest in digital assets is fundamentally changing the investment landscape, as propelled by the strengthening of core transactional technologies such as custody, emerging structures, and geopolitical developments accelerating the move towards alternative alpha generation. According to a 2021 study by Fidelity, more than half of institutions across Asia, Europe and the U.S. currently invest in digital assets, and adoption rates are highest in Asia (71%).

In this session, supported by AIMA and ACCESS and moderated by Simmons & Simmons, we will be hearing from game-changer financial institutions who have led the charge in obtaining some of the first few digital assets exchange licenses in Singapore and Hong Kong, who will share their insights on some of the lessons learned and future potential for adoption of digital assets in Asia.

On 12 August 2021, DBS Vickers, the brokerage arm of Singapore’s DBS Bank, announced that it has received in-principle approval from the Monetary Authority of Singapore to provide digital payment token services in Singapore. This closely follows that of one of Australia’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Independent Reserve, which was the first to be approved by MAS. There are still other applicants in line awaiting MAS’ review of license applications.
