Advising Kommunalkredit on major renewable energy financing

Simmons has advised Kommunalkredit Austria AG on a HoldCo financing package of up to EUR 48 million for a solar PV portfolio and battery energy storage systems.

International law firm Simmons & Simmons has successfully advised specialised bank Kommunalkredit Austria AG (“Kommunalkredit”) on a holding company level (HoldCo) financing package of up to EUR 48 million for the SÜDWERK Group, a leading German renewable energy producer headquartered in Bavaria. The financing will support SÜDWERK’s ambitious growth plans and further solidify its position as a technology-driven provider of end-to-end solutions for the energy transition in Germany.

The tailored medium-term financing covers SÜDWERK’s most advanced projects, including an 800 MWp solar PV portfolio, two 20 MW battery energy storage systems (BESS), and multiple sub-stations. With a development pipeline exceeding 3 GWp of PV and 120 MW of late-stage BESS, the transaction sets a precedent for combining multiple asset classes at the holding level to enable scalable, bankable structures for the energy transition.

The deal was led by Dr Jens Gölz, who heads the energy, natural resources, and infrastructure (ENRI) team at Simmons & Simmons in Germany. He commented, “We are proud that this transaction underscores Simmons’ expertise in advising on complex, innovative financing structures in the renewable energy sector, further cementing the firm’s position as a trusted partner in the energy transition. I’d like to extend my gratitude to everyone involved, especially the colleagues from Kommunalkredit, for this exceptional collaboration”.
